Home Improvement DIY Projects – A Few Suggestions To Get You Started

DIY home improvement projects, both large and small, are happening in everybody’s neighborhood each and every weekend. So rather than put off your own home improvement for another six months why don’t you just dust off the hammer and saw, get your creative juices flowing and get into your project today.

If you are a novice at home improvement DIY style then you can become initiated in the ‘do it yourself’ way by initially tackling a small project, one that does not involve a great deal of skill based knowledge. Say, for example, you have just relocated and you are not too impressed with the previous occupant’s color scheme throughout the house – you can start your home improvement career by heading down to your local paint shop, load yourself up with brushes, paint, turpentine and a few ground cover sheets – turn up the music and go crazy on the walls. A painting project is one that does not involve buying or hiring expensive equipment but the end result can be quite spectacular, particularly if you have combined colors well.

If you intend to paint the interior of your home first then it is a good idea to have a family discussion to hear everyone’s suggestion regarding the proposed color scheme. The children’s views are important particularly if you are going to paint their rooms because if you just went ahead and used the colors you like without consulting them it could cause major grief. Just imagine how impressed your sports jock 16-year-old son would react if he came home from practice to find that you had painted his sanctum a mixture of purples and pinks. Remember everyone has an opinion about colors and the object is to reach a consensus together.

The saying goes that ‘a change is as good as a holiday’ and having a freshly painted home certainly makes the rooms feel fresh and revitalised. At the completion of the project you will end up with a great sense of satisfaction and probably a dash of motivation to start you on the road to your next DIY home improvement project.

Easy Ideas For Outside The Home

Other relatively inexpensive home improvement DIY projects can de done to the external areas of the home. You may think that it is time to upgrade your backyard area but don’t actually know what to do. So the best move in this situation is to borrow a few books from your local library or look online at how some of the more elegant and expensive properties have structured their backyards. For instance, you could really add some interesting features like building a fountain or installing some benches around the perimeter of the garden. You may even decide to take on a bigger home improvement DIY project and build your own gazebo in your backyard. If the garden is in need of a general spruce-up then maybe something as simple as clearing away bushes and trees can make a marked difference to the appearance of your backyard.

Give a little thought on what you can do to improve the appearance and features of your home and grounds and then visit your local handyman store or go on line for some advice and guidance to ensure your home improvement DIY project is a roaring success.

Does Wind Power…Solve our energy crisis?

The short answer is no. In fact in my opinion and the opinion of many experts and casual observers alike the only foreseeable solution to our energy crisis is nuclear power. That being said wind power can and should play a major part in our energy solution.

Does Wind Power…Provide enough power?

Well it seems as though it can. The largest wind turbine has recently been built in Germany and the power generated is astonishing. This one generator can power over 35,000 homes and as technology progresses they will become larger and more efficient. In less than 10 years I estimate there will be a wind turbine that could power over 100,000 homes.

Does Wind Power…have an answer to its intermittent failures.

Unfortunately relying on mother nature to provide a gentle breeze 365 days a year is not a fool-proof strategy. That is why wind power will only ever be part of the solution. However these intermittent failures are generally grossly misreported and are by no means are wind turbines as unreliable as may of been reported. The major factor behind the intermittent failures comes mostly from the placement of the wind turbines which is becoming increasingly more accurate.

Does Wind Power…Make economical sense.

Compared to coal power, probably not. Compared to nuclear power, probably not. But it would be almost impossible for any environmentally safe energy provider to compete economically with these options (and no I don’t support a carbon tax). But in terms of cost per unit of energy produced that number is coming down every year. Whilst it will be always more expensive, environmentally it will make economic sense in around a decade.

What I think doesn’t really matter its what our politicians think. Economically coal will be the best option to produce electricity for at least another century, but the arguments for wind power grow stronger every day.

3 Steps to a Greener Party

Recently, I organised a friends engagement party. First off, a good time was had by all, but more relevant to this article was the fact that any social event can create a lot of waste and generally would not be described as Eco friendly. So here are a few simple tips to make your next function a little more friendly for the environment.

Hire Lighting

Lighting of an event can consume a tremendous amount of energy and in some cases where generators are used it can cause a lot of pollution. Simple answer is lighting hire. By hiring your lights you are far more likely to get more powerful and far more efficient lighting units compared to the ones you would have around the house. The efficiency of new units is truly remarkable which makes hiring lighting the green option.

Plastic Tableware

Besides the fact I hate cutting a steak with a plastic butter knife using plastic tableware is a tremendous waste. It may save some time when you are cleaning and avoid breakages but compared to the negatives it is hardly justifiable. They are an unnecessary waste, they look tacky and they are terrible to eat with so go the classy option and use your ceramic tableware.

Have a bin handy

Perhaps its only my own personal experiences but so many functions I go to have no visible bins to dispose of rubbish. Or if they do have a bin it gets completely filled before the meal. When this happens most people will just throw the rubbish away, in your garden, bush or the street. Having a few bins out is not too hard and it makes a big difference.

So there you have it, three simple tips to make your next function a little greener. Preparation and planning can make a huge difference to your hopefully “green” party.

Build Your Own Solar Panel In 6 Easy Steps

This is an incredibly simplified step-by-step guide to make your own solar panels at home. The infomation was sourced mainly from DIY Solar which has full details on building a solar panel.

If you are interested in protecting the environment, saving money and handyman projects on the weekend then building your own solar panels ticks all three boxes. Building your own solar panels is easier than most people anticipate and can be an extremely rewarding experience. The cost of building a solar panel is minimal and cit can usually pay for itself in a few months with the savings in your electricity bills. Anyway enough rambling from me, lets get into it. Heres the 6 step guide to building your own solar panel.

Things You’ll Need:

  • 16 volt solar panel
  • Rechargeable 12 volt lead or acid battery
  • Battery box
  • DC meter
  • Inverter
  • Handheld drill

Step 1
First things first you need to find yourself a small solar panel that is 12 volts or higher. In this case a 16 volt solar panel will suit your needs the best.
It is pretty easy to find a panel like this and your best bet is to go shopping at a local RV store or even a small marina. You should be able to find one that is priced around or even below $100.

Step 2
The next thing you are going to need is a battery. While you may be tempted to go big or go home on this one, a smaller yet rechargeable battery is your best bet.
A 12 volt lead or acid battery will do the trick. The type you are looking for here is a deep cell battery as they are built the best for constant and continuous use.

Step 3
In order to build your solar panel safely you will also want to purchase a battery box. This will offer protection from the battery and the power it exudes in case you are working in small quarters or have small children running around in the area.

Step 4
The next materials required are a DC meter that matches the voltage of your battery and a DC input. These products will allow you to convert your energy from the panel and apply them to power sources around your home. Of course if you are hoping to power AC appliances you will need an inverter as well.

Step 5
It is now time to actually put the labor into your solar panel. Use a handheld drill to attach your meter and DC input to the top end of the battery box. Next use some insulated wire to connect the meter to the battery.
Be very careful to only work with one wire at a time and connect the first wire to the negative input first. Use the same procedure to connect the DC inlet and the solar panel to the battery itself.

Step 6
Now you are ready to start converting the sun’s power into your own usable energy. Close the lid tight with a cord and put the entire product out into the sun. Wait for about 8 hours and then get ready to bask in some home made energy.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

You have probably heard of Polycrystalline Solar Panels before, but most people are not exactly sure what the term means and what the difference is with othe solar panels.

A polycrystalline solar panel module is made from a block of silicon that has multiple crystals. These panels are square in shape, and may have a surface that looks somewhat like a mosaic. That’s because of all the different crystals that make up the module. Other types of panels may appear smooth and even, because they are made up of only silicon crystals. These are called monocrystalline modules. The third type of panel uses a thin film layer of material otherwise known as amorphous.

Polycrystalline solar modules are less efficient than those made from a single crystal. However, they are much simpler to produce, and cost far less to manufacture. This makes them much less expensive for buyers. The durability and longevity, however, are comparable to their monocrystalline cousins. Polycrystalline solar panel modules could put solar power into the hands of people who could not afford the monocrystalline cells.

Largest Wind Power?

Whilst wind power has been around for a while it is only recently getting some mainstream funding to test the limits. So lets look at the records for all the largest wind power categories.

Largest Wind Power Turbine

This record goes to the Enercon E-126 Turbine. The turbine is located in Emden, Germany and has comes with some pretty impressive numbers. The diameter of the blades is 126M (416 feet) and it can produce 6+ megawatts (enough to power 5000 homes).

Largest Wind Power Farm

Horse Hollow in Texas, USA is currently the worlds largest wind farm. The farm has 421 turbines spread over 47,000 acres of land which generate a total capacity of 735 megawatts.

Largest Wind Power Producer (Gross production)

Surprisingly the world’s biggest polluter is also the largest producer of wind power. The US produced (in 2008) 25.2 gigawatts of wind powered electricity which is roughly 20.8% of the worlds total output.

Largest Wind Power Producer (% of overall production)

The pioneers of wind power so far, Denmark produces over 20% of its energy needs from wind farms. Spain is a distant second with around 15% of its power provided by wind turbines.

There you go a few surprises there when it comes to, Largest Wind Power.

Against Wind Power?

A growing number of people are joining the anti-wind power bandwagon. But are these people being easily swayed or is there a dark sub-context to perceived perfection of wind power? Lets review the arguments Against Wind Power:

Noisy

The actual noise emitted by a wind turbine is generally only audible for a few hundred yards except under very rare topographical conditions.

Visually Unappealing

The aesthetics of the wind turbines is completely related to the individual. Many people (such as myself) find the look of wind turbines rather inspiring but that is just my personal preference. Many people see wind turbines as blights on the natural landscape and rather ugly. Either way a case against wind power, would not, and should not come down to how they look.

Kills large number of birds

It is true that wind turbines are responsible for a number of bird deaths. However the number being reported is greatly exaggerated and not significant if compared to other sources. If you compare the number of bird deaths from a wind turbine to lattice-type communication towers the numbers would pale in significance.

Threat to Bio-Diversity

Wind turbines could pose a threat to local bio-diversity. But in most cases environmental impact studies are carried out to ensure the threat is minimal and turbines are usually placed in low impact areas such as farmlands and in the ocean. In addition to that the threat of the fossil fuel industry is far greater on universal biodiversity than wind power could ever be.

Reliability

The reliability of wind turbines has always been a contentious point. Opponents of wind power often claim erroneously that, as an “intermittent generator”, wind power cannot be run as base-load to replace coal-fired power stations and cannot contribute to peak demand without expensive dedicated long-term storage. Since no-one is proposing to run a whole electricity grid on wind power alone, these claims are simplistic. Wind power can reliably power a large percentage of any nations energy needs.

To think in the current climate (pun intended) there would be such ferocious attacks on a cheap, clean and reliable energy source would be funny if it was not so serious. I theorise that traditional energy providers are setting up and funding such groups to protect the interests of their respective industries.

Advantages of Home Solar Power

The third advantage of setting up a home solar power option is the saving in terms of electricity bills. Solar power cells, which are used in producing electricity, are affordable and long lasting. Once you have them installed in your roof, you can be rest assured that they would carry on for the rest of your life. You only cost is the initial purchase of the solar powered kits and the installation charges. Nowadays, there are solar power kits which are available for under a hundred dollars. Such options can be had through the means of a reputed online manufacturer only. Thereafter, the total cost of power generation is nil and you not only generate power for your home, you also never actually spend a dime while doing so.

Solar Thermal Power Is Pure

With the rise in air pollution and the reduction in the ozone layer, the chances are that your conventional sources of energy may prove to be a hindrance to the future generations. This is when solar thermal power comes into picture. Over here, not only are your electric bills reduced drastically, you also have a chance of keeping your environment neat and tidy. This is so as solar energy is a clean energy resource and it does not emit any harmful chemicals in the atmosphere. Hence, whenever solar energy is produced from home, it is considered a blessing in disguise for the environment.

Solar Power Cells Are Noiseless

As compared to the usual sources of energy, the solar power cells, which are generally used in a solar powered grid, are noiseless in nature. Hence, if you are using solar generated power for your household uses, you are indirectly saving your environment from excessive noise pollution. At the same time, the energy which is generated is never wasted and can be easily stored for future use.

Placement of Garden Patio Furniture

Various garden patio furniture sets are available in these more contemporary styles, and can be as bold or as plain as you would like them to be. Favorite models include the L-shaped rattan sofa and coffee tables which are supplied with contrasting bright or white coloured cushions.

The lines of 2009 rattan collections seem to be preferred for many reasons. For instance, many of the pieces included in these types of garden patio furniture sets are streamlined, lively, and compact. Some items are more irregular while others are more rectangular or square shaped.

As you decorate, realize that there is no end to the numbers of room designs you can come up with, using simple mixing and matching philosophies. There is only one rule that always applies. That is that “less is more,” which is obviously a standard guideline of most art forms.

If you wish to make a strong statement, look at some of the more daring, futuristic and outlandish accessories available. These are often placed with more neutral-coloured sofas, coffee tables, or chairs.

Upon buying any items intended as use in garden patio furniture sets, make sure you have a definite estimation of the color scheme and setting.

As you browser for the right combination of items, make sure you choose items that are longer-lasting. Certain models of rattan are UV treated and can be placed outside all year long without the concern about fading, splitting, or cracking of the rattan. Most of these pieces come with an outdoor waterproof cover that can protect the furniture and helps keep it dry and clean when not in use.

More often than not, the frames are created from lightweight aluminum is usually coated in order to prevent it from rusting. Garden patio furniture sets that are made with these supporting materials are also simpler to move from one place to another and can be stored very tightly.
